Chapter 13

Logic told Dodo that the most likely people to have had a hand in Lonnie’s demise were the performers, though she hadn’t yet figured out how anyone on stage at the time could have done it. Having questioned the surviving members of Smokey Syncopation she was now determined to mine Crazy Train for information and had called to invite them on a lazy trip down the river, a trip that would take them right past the Isle of Dogs.

As Dodo and Rupert approached the dock near Westminster, where they had arranged to meet the band, she almost didn’t recognize Miranda in the small crowd. Today, her hair was mouse brown and worn in a short bob under her hat, and she was wearing far less makeup. Honestly, if Gerry and Fred had not been with her, Dodo might have walked straight by.

“Hello!” said Miranda touching her hair and smoothing the understated, lavender frock. “Thought I’d come as myself today. Plain old Edna.”

“Just as lovely,” said Rupert, which, as usual, was just the right thing to say.

Gerry and Fred were dressed casually in tan trousers and cream jackets, and both raised their straw hats in greeting.

A white pleasure boat pulled in to the bottom of the stairs, and a swarthy sailor type called up, “Danforth?”

Rupert raised a hand. “That’s us.”

He helped Dodo and Miranda down the mossy steps, and the two women settled into comfortable seats in the rear of the luxury craft.

Miranda giggled. “I’ve been to London before, but I’ve never done anything like this.”

“It’s my favorite way to see the city on a sunny day,” said Dodo as the boat rocked gently while the men found their seats.

Gulls dipped for fish and screamed into the bright, cloudless sky with their prey. Other pleasure boats whipped by, the wake making their own boat rock harder. Miranda gripped the side.

“You’ve been to London before, then?” Dodo asked.

“Oh, yeah. A couple of times but before I had any of my own money. Took the bus or tube everywhere. Did the touristy things, you know?”

“What was your favorite?” asked Rupert, turning around.

“The Tower,” she said without hesitation. “Gave me shivers to be in something so old.”

“We’ll pass it today,” said Dodo with satisfaction. “You get a lovely view from the river.”

“What about you two?” asked Rupert. “Have you ever been to the capital before?”

“Nah,” said Gerry. “Not a great traveler, me. Never saw the point. But I’m enjoying this trip even though that copper is making us stick around because of the—well, you know.” His lips twisted in emphasis.

“I barely had enough money to eat before all this,” said Fred, his voice flat. “Never any money for a luxury like traveling.”

It was at times like this that Dodo was grateful for the reminder that she lived a very privileged life. It was so easy to take these things for granted.

“How do you like it?” she asked him.

“To be honest, it’s a bit crowded for my taste, and no one seems to understand me.
